Diving with Bull Sharks

So let me say upfront, today’s activity was not for everybody but for me, it was the highlight of my adventure so far. Today I went diving with Bull Sharks, 4m long adults. Not one or two but at least 16 were counted at one time.

In my humble opinion sharks have an undeserved reputation. A natural fear of the unknown, a certain movie with spooky music, and they have been demonised to an unfair degree. They are the top predator in the ocean and like Lions or Wolves they deserve our respect and a fair degree of caution. But let me share one statistic – about 100 million sharks are killed each year by people, whilst there are about 75 shark attacks each year on people and only about 5 are fatalities. Which is the dangerous species?

This was quite an advanced dive, going straight to 25m in moderate current and then lying on the ocean floor at a rope while the sharks were fed (which again is not for everybody) but it did afford some amazing views as the photos below show. A fantastic trip and I would like to thank Phantom Divers for an amazing experience. If you are in Playa del Carmen and are an Advanced Open Water Diver, I would thoroughly recommend this experience.

My last diving trip, on a reef off the Kenyan coast was my first and last – exciting enough that I am very happy to live vicariously through your photos!

Keep the updates coming – they are lovely to read!
